Crushed Stone | Frequently Asked Questions
Boxley provides stone products throughout the state of Virginia. We operate several quarries in the state; these locations are only accessible to our team and partners. We also have various locations, including a stone supply source where you can inquire about products. Given our footprint in the state, finding crushed stone products in bulk is always within reach!
Projects come in all sizes and complexities. While it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact quantity of crushed stone you’ll need for a project; we can help you make a few guestimates here.
Consider the type of stone product desired for the project—we have several available, as outlined on this page. You will also want to consider the shape and texture, as these will influence the final design you’re attempting to achieve.
The easy solution is to measure the area: L x W x H.
That’s Length x Width x Height.
This formula will give you the cubic yards of the project space. That information will give our team all they need to provide an accurate quote. Of course, you may want to round up to ensure you have enough stone (better to have extra than to come up short).
Crushed stone products have many uses across several industries. The most common being:
- Landscaping— Crushed stone products can introduce unique designs to both residential and commercial projects. Our #5 stone products, for example, offer a ton of functionality and style to outdoor areas like walkways, flower beds, foundational edges, and more.
- Roadways – Crushed stone offers the traction needed to traverse rough terrain. Our stone is also very commonly found along roadways or as driveways. Stone provides an excellent alternative to hard packed dirt/clay or asphalt.
- Septic Systems – Stone is a main component of a septic tank’s drainage (leech) field. This provides the rough filtration to facilitate a tanks’ operation.
- Erosion Control – Protect areas of a home or business using stone products. Stone can also aid erosion control on steep terrain or around water sources. It provides the much-needed weight and structure to prevent the area from being affected by heavy rainfall and flooding.
Crushed stone is also used in many different products we use every day, including cement and asphalt. The finer ‘flour’ produced during the process or from grinding the stone into a fine powder is also used in construction and agriculture.
The simple answer: No.
The more detailed answer: No, crushed stone products aren’t the same as gravel because the former is man-made, and the latter is naturally occurring.
Large stone is broken up into different sizes, resulting in the crushed stone products you see offered through Boxley. The shape and size depend on our specifications and the needs of our clients. Because of how they’re produced, crushed stone generally has a rougher design.
On the other hand, Gravel is what you’d find in rivers, beaches, glacial deposits, and other areas where stone is naturally worn down to have a bit of smoothness.
