Explore The Earth at A Boxley Quarry

Boxley, a Summit Materials Company, hosts and participates in STEM-compliant programs that give future generations a stone-solid foundation for success.

Explore the Earth

We have a long history of working with elementary schools and teachers through our geology presentation and quarry tour that meet Virginia’s 5th-grade SOL standards.

Students learn about everything from the mining process, mining safety, and why mining and aggregate are essential to daily life. Then, during their tour, they witness a quarry during regular operating hours from our overlook.

“It’s great to be a part of the education process; most people don’t realize everything we would lose without aggregate. Metals, glass, plastics, carpet, vinyl siding, bricks, block, concrete, paved roads, the list goes on.” – Josh Wilson, Director of Product Support

Our partnership with The Virginia Museum of Natural History began in 2019 with a $10,000 gift to help the museum deliver various STEM-based educational programs. Held in-person and virtually, VMNH staff produces various programs to benefit schools, families, and general audiences throughout Virginia and beyond.

If you are an educator interested in setting up an Explore the Earth quarry tour for your students at one of our locations throughout southwest and central Virginia, please contact us at contact@boxley.kinsta.cloud or 1 (888) 442-8878.

Boxley Recruiter Provides Quality Control for the Employee Experience

At Boxley, a Summit Materials Company, quality control isn’t just seen in the field. We have a team of talent acquisition professionals, like Manisha Hall, who work to find the best candidates for the company and start them on their prosperous career paths.

“It’s rewarding to match fantastic people with great long-term opportunities where they can learn, grow, and in some cases, change their lives,” says Manisha, Sr. Talent Acquisition Lead.

Manisha Hall

Manisha came on board as a recruiter with Boxley in January 2021, giving her a first-hand understanding of post-pandemic job-hunting. With this insight, combined with over 15 years of Human Resource experience and a Society of Human Resource Management- Senior Certified Professional credential, Manisha leads projects and contributes to a team committed to standardizing and prioritizing employee value propositions, onboarding challenges, and hiring best practices.

Less than six months after joining the company, Manisha expanded to the Regional Recruiter position before becoming the Senior Talent Acquisition Lead in March 2022. She now focuses not only on Boxley but on Summit Material’s entire East Region, along with Continental Cement.

“Experience, work history, dedication, and passion about what you do matter more in our industry now than ever before,” Manisha emphasizes to those considering the industry. “Formal education is beneficial to a degree, but there are many paths that can lead to a successful career that simply require the will to work hard and ability and willingness to continue to learn—from others, from a book, and hands-on!”

Boxley Employees Are a Knowledgeable Resource

Boxley, a Summit Materials Company, is not only a source of quality construction materials and services but a resource to help our customers succeed. Customers and fellow employees value the knowledge and intuitions of employees such as Ron Dodd and Cody Flint, who provide expertise and insights to help them build a better project.

Reflecting on working with residential and commercial customers, Ron says, “I enjoy walking into a possible new customer’s office and striking up a conversation. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting new and interesting people and enjoy providing them with the knowledge they need to bring their project to life.”

When Ron Dodd was hired as an Outside Sales Representative at our Roanoke Block, Brick, and Hardscapes location, he’d already been in the industry as a mason and contractor for over 20 years, followed by selling brick for an additional three. His experience and excellent performance with residential customers led him to move on to Hardscape Dealer Representative—forging relationships with new dealers and architects.

Ron and Cody agree, “Never stop learning, be an observant sponge while working with the more experienced individuals. Hop in, and they will be more than happy to guide you.”

Cody, currently a Project Manager, first came to Boxley as an intern during the summer of 2019 before graduating from Virginia Tech’s Mining Department with an offer for a full-time position. After spending a year in our Operations Development Program (ODP), he got his feet wet in project management with the teardown and construction of our new sand plant at Lawyers Road before moving on to the current project at our Fieldale Quarry.

“The mining industry always presents unique challenges. It takes a lot of work to get to the end goal, but it pays off,” reveals Cody.

Boxley Employees Benefit From 401(k) Options

At Boxley, a Summit Materials Company, all employees, from part-time laborers to the CEO, have 401(k) options available to them. As a result, employees like Sam Craighill watch as their savings grow with their careers.

What is a 401(k)?

A 401(k) is a way for an employee to save for retirement by having money removed automatically, pre-tax, from their paychecks and invested into options they believe will best prepare them for the future.

Our employees not only receive access to these plans, but we’ll also match dollar for dollar up to 4% (not to exceed the IRS limits)!

What’s Sam’s experience at Boxley?

Sam’s career at Boxley started in high school when he worked as a laborer in our Lynchburg Block, Brick, & Hardscapes location. Even as a part-time employee, he was eligible to participate in the company-offered 401(k) plan and was then able to build on it when he returned to join the inside sales team full-time in April 2021.

Sam has continued to grow in his career with Boxley, and thanks to benefits such as the company matching 401(k), he is able to save for the future. He is now a dispatcher for our block division and offers this advice, “Learn to stick things out. Don’t get discouraged if you make a mistake, look at it as a learning experience for growth. If you work hard and learn along the way things will come back around to you.”

Local Fire & EMS Tours Resume at Boxley Locations

Upholding a long-standing tradition, Boxley is pleased to resume annual tours for the local fire and EMS personnel servicing our various locations.

The purpose of the visits and tours is, first and foremost, safety—for our employees and the first responders. Keeping rescue personnel familiar with our property layouts and procedures equips them, so they are aware of any hazards they could encounter should we ever need their assistance with an emergency on-site.

Throughout the tour, safety aspects get brought to the forefront, but we also take the opportunity to educate the crew members about our industry and what we do daily. Finally, to close out, we like to provide a meal and present them with Boxley’s annual donation.

“We’ve been doing this for many years. It’s a great opportunity for us to get to know some of our local first responders and provide insight into our operation.” Cline Dooley- Area Manager—Blue Ridge, Fieldale, & Rich Patch

Tours and educational visits are also open to students, teachers, and select community groups. If you are interested in setting up a quarry tour at one of our central and southwest Virginia locations, please contact us at contact@boxley.kinsta.cloud or 1 (888) 442-8878.

Boxley Employee’s Son Named 2022 VAA Scholarship Recipient

Matthew Witt, son of Boxley asphalt contract admin manager Stacie Witt, received the 2022 Richard Schreck Scholarship from the Virginia Asphalt Association (VAA), a unique opportunity offered to assist dependents of VAA member companies, like Boxley, in furthering their education beyond high school.

In addition to his connection to Boxley, Matthew had to complete four application questions and obtain a letter of recommendation from a VAA member company representative and his current school principal or guidance counselor.

Matthew entered the CVCC Early College Program in his junior year of high school and graduated May 12, 2022, Summa Cum Laude with an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree in General Studies.

“Matthew has grown up in our office, and he’s turned into quite the young man. We’re all very proud of his accomplishments and can’t wait to see what he does in the future.” Charles Craddock- Vice President—Asphalt & Construction

Matthew graciously accepted the $5,000 scholarship towards continuing his higher education this fall at the University of Lynchburg, where he also received the Hopwood scholarship. He’ll be double majoring in Business Administration and Statistics and minoring in Finance.

“We are very appreciative of the opportunity given to Matthew through Boxley’s sponsorship as a VAA member.” Stacie Witt

After spending his junior and senior year at Brookville High School as a member of the National Honor Society, Matthew graduated on June 3, 2022, tied for 3rd out of the 264 graduates.

Boxley’s Human Resources Specialist Support Employee Experiences

Boxley encourages and supports employees to grow and expand their knowledge so they are eligible for promotions and can execute their jobs to the best of their ability. Peter Flora started as a Human Resources (HR) Administrative Assistant and worked through HR Generalist and HR Manager before achieving his current status of HR Specialist.

Pete took his HR education into his own hands straight out of high school by attending Radford University for four years and earning his Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with a concentration in Human Resources. Ten years after graduating, Pete came to Boxley after hearing about the employment opportunity from a previous colleague.

“There is always something to be learned—no matter the job or task-at-hand,” Pete remarks.

For the past 14 years, Pete has continued learning with hands-on experience and becoming a Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Certified Professional. “I had the great privilege of working with someone for several years who was a mentor; she helped shape my career at Boxley and in the field of Human Resources.”

If you work for the company, you know Pete.

No matter a person’s position at Boxley, Pete is there to assist employees as they navigate benefits or policies. He welcomes new hires through orientation, makes sure Department of Transportation (DOT) applicants are in good standing and eligible to drive, and is a liaison for payroll/timekeeping. “I enjoy working with our employees by supporting them and ensuring they get the best benefits for themselves and their families.”

Leading by example, Pete recommends to the younger generation getting ready to enter the workforce, “perseverance and dedication to even the most mundane of tasks goes a long way. Developing expertise in a particular skill set is beneficial, but it’s also important to be dependable, transparent, and not afraid to take the initiative.”

Equipment Operator to General Foreman, A Career At Boxley is Yours for the Taking

At Boxley, you can get hired as an Equipment Operator, apply for any open position inside the company, and earn your way to become General Foreman. At our Fieldale Quarry, Danny Scearce knows firsthand how you can advance your career at Boxley as he’s excelled through six different positions across multiple locations in his 28-year employment.

Danny first spent three months as a laborer before getting moved into the equipment operator position, he applied for. “I’m glad I didn’t give up,” he says, “even though shoveling spillage and other tasks wasn’t what I signed up for, it gave me an appreciation for the quarry and team I was working with.”

Utilizing his self-taught knowledge, Danny operated various pieces of mobile equipment at Fieldale before moving to another operation, stepping up to the challenge to begin advancing his career. He switched to Maintenance, then back to Pit Loader Operator, then into Stripping Foreman, where he traveled to multiple locations overseeing the job through to the end.

Becoming known as ‘the man with the plan’, Danny was offered the position of a Traveling Special Projects Person to complete various operations throughout Virginia and Georgia. “I have yet to see a piece of equipment I can’t figure out. My years of hands-on training provided me the mindset of looking at something and being able to offer a productive solution,” Danny proclaims.

Now back at the quarry where it all started, Danny’s day looks much different than it used to. As General Foreman, he helps run the day-to-day operations. Although every day is different due to a quarry’s many changing parts, Danny ensures the team understands the tasks for the day, pre-shift inspections get completed, and keeps everything running smoothly. Even if that means hopping back on a piece of equipment to fill in when someone is off.

Speaking to the generations getting ready to enter the workforce, Danny says, “if you are interested in anything to do with this line of work, give it a try, and don’t give up. Just because you don’t start exactly where you want to be doesn’t mean you won’t end up further than you imagined. It’s all about the work you put into it.”
