The City of Lynchburg, Virginia is undertaking a major roadway expansion that will transform Lakeside Drive for drivers and pedestrians. Boxley, the aggregate materials supplier for this project, is proud to play a role in the enhancements to the surrounding community, including improved access to nearby Lynchburg University. The upgrade became mandatory after a flood in previous years left Lakeside Drive closed for weeks.
A four-lane multi-span bridge will replace the 85-year-old bridge which will be demolished when the project reaches completion in the summer of 2023. Shared Use Paths for pedestrians will also be a part of the final product, connecting to a new roundabout on the east end. The improvements and additions coming to the area will upgrade traffic flow, provide safe passage for patrons, and reduce vehicle pollutants impacting the environment.
The $28.5-million project will utilize eight types of aggregate from Boxley Lawyers Road quarry: crusher run, #3, #10, #21, #30, #57, and Class 1 and Class 2 Rip Rap which will be used in nearly every component of construction from concrete and asphalt mixes to landscaping.
